Verger: that person in a black robe who sits next to me (Rev. Anne) on Sundays!

What’s it like to serve as a verger at St. Clare’s? It’s not that difficult, but it is very important. It’s also an embodiment, in our common worship, of St. Clare’s tradition of strong lay leadership. You get the lovely experience of serving communion and helping guide the experience of worship–maybe I’m biased, but it’s both fun and meaningful, generally!

If we are successful in gathering a few more folks, you’d serve about once every 6-8 weeks.  You do have to show up 15 minutes early, but beyond that, there are no special meetings or requirements except being present on Sundays. You can serve at whichever service you generally attend, and you’ll receive a few invitations to serve at special services like funerals. Let me know if you’re interested. We’ll either have a brief training on a Sunday or I’ll just give individuals a tutorial and have you shadow a verger for a week.

Thanks for considering!

Anne

P.S. Did you know that vergers have a guild? And a website? And a Facebook page? And an Annual Conference (in San Diego this year)? And a YouTube channel?
