Adult Faith Formation invites you to join us as we immerse ourselves in one African American spiritual each week, listening to the song, discussing the lyrics, and making connections to Scripture. With brief notes on context, these songs become a springboard for the watching, waiting, and wondering we do during Advent, both as Christians and as people seeking justice for our Black sisters and brothers and communal healing for all. The four featured spirituals are “Mary Had a Baby,” “Rise Up Shepherd and Follow,” “Children, Go Where I Send Thee,” and “Go, Tell It on the Mountain.”

Tuesday evenings during Advent, 7-8p. November 30, and December 7, 14, and 21, 2021.
Sessions will be held via Zoom.

Note: We initially intended this as an “all ages” program but have revised it as an adult audience only. Children’s materials are being provided to John and the Children’s Choir each week.

For those wishing to go deeper into this Bible study, we recommend the following book: Mary Had a Baby: An Advent Bible Study Based on African American Spirituals by Cheryl Kirk-Duggan and Marilyn E. Thornton (Abingdon Press, 2014). The book is not required to participate.
