St. Clare’s is beginning the fourth year of its partnership with Perry Early Learning Center (Perry ELC) in the Ypsilanti School District.
Description of Perry Early Learning Center
Perry Early Learning Center is located in Ypsilanti, MI. The school has over 300 students in classes that range from Pre-K through 1st grade.
The school ranks among the top 20% of elementary schools in Michigan for
¨ diversity of the student population, and
¨ the largest % of students who qualify for free lunches.
Volunteer Activities
St. Clare’s volunteers at Perry read with 1st graders under the direction of the two Title 1 teachers, help out in individual classrooms, and assist with one-off events like Dentist Days and Field Day.
Skills Required
All you really need is a love for children and a willingness to show them how valued they are. If there are special instructions for a specific activity, the teacher will provide them. Volunteers should simply come prepared to have fun and engage with the kids, who thrive when they get extra attention.
Time Commitment
The school day runs from 8:30 AM – 3:30 PM, and volunteers can sign up to work in the morning or afternoon on a particular day of the week. A shift can range from 1 ½ to 3 hours, depending on what is worked out with the teacher that the volunteer is working with.
Who To Contact
Whether you would like to volunteer on a regular basis or for an occasional event, or if you’d simply like more information, just contact Ann Putallaz.
We have a dedicated group of volunteers but we could really use more. Last year, we were not able to provide a volunteer for a few teachers who had requested one. A few more volunteers would make a big difference!
