Saturday, August 9, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Decades ago, Black residents of Washtenaw county founded Woodlawn Cemetery, because other options for burial were few due to racism and discrimination. A group has organized to restore the cemetery. You can learn more about the project here: https://www.washtenaw.org/4558/Woodlawn-Cemetery-Restoration-Project. Recently, the Woodlawn Cemetery Restoration Project was featured on Michigan Public Radio’s Stateside with April Baer. Listen in to learn about the project and to hear from project co-leads Dr. Debby Covington, Kat Slocum, and Cedric Bass, a descendant: Stateside: Wednesday, July 9, 2025 (starts at 8:25). We are organizing as a St. Clare’s community to join a restoration day at Woodlawn Cemetery on August 9th from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. RSVP to Ann Putallaz by August 1 and she will register our group. You don’t need to attend the whole time. Bring your garden tools such as pruners, rakes, tarps, hedgers, weed whackers, a comfortable chair (for taking breaks), etc.
