Blair, Chunk, Gizmo… Marshmallow, Zoom, Flash… Harly, Levi, Coconut… Fiona, Miranda, Nika… Minnaloushe, Axis, and Lizzie … all beloved four-legged companions that received blessings in honor of the Feast of Saint Francis this past weekend. Reverend Maryjane Peck and Deacon Intern Kelly Scheu officiated in the drive through circle at St. Clare’s Episcopal Church in Ann Arbor.
Saint Francis of Assisi is known for his great love of animals and the environment. On his feast day, October 4, it is customary to celebrate companion animals with a blessing. This is a meaningful celebration for many pet owners and St. Clare’s was delighted to offer blessings despite the challenges of the pandemic – not to mention the usual precautions used when cats, dogs, rabbits, and other animals join together in one place. The annual event was re-tooled as a drive-thru to keep participants safe, with an option for a zoom service available. About twenty dogs, cats, and rabbits braved the damp, cool weather to receive blessings for a long, happy life – and treats!
