please give before July 5

This year’s youth group mission trip to Grand Rapids was unfortunately postponed.  However, we still have plenty of areas where we can serve this summer.  We are currently raising money for a program in Detroit called Fresh Rx. Beneficiaries receive a box of fresh fruit and vegetables from Eastern Market and/or from Peaches & Greens.  The people they serve are seniors who live in the Islandview neighborhood, and youth whose labs have shown unacceptable levels of lead. The primary care clinic is located inside Church of the Messiah and they will be referring patients who they believe can benefit from extra nutrition (fresh fruit and vegetables). Most are African American, and this is one way we can introduce our youth to an area of diversity and inclusion, while helping with food insecurities. Everyone eats. This is a way that our youth can participate in a manner that is ongoing and real.

Each participant/patient receives a box of fresh fruit and vegetables every three weeks, the cost of one box is $15. For the season, ending early September, they will receive 6 boxes. This totals $90 for the season/person. Currently they have funding for 43 participants. They would love any assistance to make a difference with more households.  There will be nutritionists who will contact each patient and keep the lines of communication open with recipes and other follow up.

If you would like to help in this mission, you can send a check to St. Clare’s and write Fresh RX in the memo line, or you can give online at the St. Clare’s website.  When choosing the fund, click “other” and then type in FRESH RX.  Thank you for considering this mission!
