Vergers

The verger is the “detail person” at the Sunday services, a role that enables the clergy to focus on worship and newcomers. You will frequently see the verger dressed in a long black robe with a silver cross around their neck. The verger makes sure that people who agreed to serve are present or a replacement is found, and that unassigned servant duties are covered. The verger counts attendance and fills in the count in the parish register after the service. Finally, the verger brings the offering money to the church safe.
